Gambling Games of Malaya By C.T. Dobree 1955
Whay : Kelantan verstion of Chee Fah
The game of Chee Fah (字花) or Hwah Hwey (花會) is also well known in the State of Kelantan where it is popularly known with the name "WHAY".
But "Whay" in Kelantan is not based on the 36 names of historical persons of China.
Instead it is based on 37 common nouns with equivalent numbers 1 to 37.
As the Chinese in Kelantan are in a very small minority, the 37 common nouns are always known by their Malay names.
These are the 37 names with corresponding numbers and English translations :
No 19. Endeng is a Siamese Word
|18||Orang tua laki2||old man|
|19||Endeng||priest's boy or novice|
|30||Dulang berkaki||tray with stand|
|32||Perahu besar||big boat|
|35||Perahu kechil||small boat|
In other respects Whay is operated or should be operated in manner exactly similar to the description given to Chee Fah at page 14 et seq.
Even though there are 37 names used in Whay as against 36 in Chee Fah, the maximum dividend paid by a promoter of Whay is 30 times the original stake.
